Do You Want an Effective System (Editorial calendar) to Help You Get Ahead?

Today we are going to dive right into 5 of the more effective steps you need to know and conquer to be an effective blog and article writer.

The more effective you are.. the more your business will grow. Period.

Let’s start off with one of the most popular systems used in the writing and publishing field: an editorial calendar.

An editorial calendar can help you stay on track, increase your exposure with precise planning, and ultimately save time. Also, your editorial calendar doesn’t have to be limited to your article writing efforts.
You can (and should) include your social networking strategy, newsletter, new publication launches, multi-media efforts (e.g. webinars, videos, blog article posts, podcasts, etc.), and more!

The article writing portion of your editorial calendar should include these 5 steps to effective article writing and publishing:

1. Brainstorming (including idea generation, research, and planning)
2.Writing
3.Proofreading and Editing
4.Submitting
5.Publishing

These steps can be performed both in the short-term or long-term, but the important key is: plan it by scheduling it in your editorial calendar ahead of time – daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and/or yearly.

Plan Ahead with a Weekly Editorial Calendar

Schedule the 5 steps to effective article writing and publishing into your weekly editorial calendar by blocking off periods of time throughout the week.

For example, let’s say you’re a new Expert Author and your expertise is event and party planning. Your goal is to build exposure to your brand and increase traffic to your blog showcasing party planning tips and your website featuring party products. To do this, you decide to publish two quality, original articles a week (which will yield at least 100 articles by the end of the year).

Your editorial calendar might look a little something like this:

Monday: 10:00 A.M. to Noon – 20 minute brainstorm session with keyword research; research parlour games and history; create outline for parlour game articles.
Tuesday: 8:00 A.M. to Noon – Write articles “Discover How Parlour Games Can Spice Up Your Event” and “Charades: How to Play and the Origin of Charades.”
Wednesday: 10:00 A.M. to Noon – Proofread and edit articles. Submit to EzineArticles!
Thursday: 11:00 A.M. to 11:15 A.M. – Check on article review status of articles.
Friday: 11:00 A.M. 11:15 A.M. – Tweet/post published articles on social networks and prep for newsletter and blog.

At first, time yourself. Then find areas you can become more efficient by trimming your time and experimenting with how you approach each step while still providing quality content for your readers. For example, you could ask a friend, relative, or colleague to proofread your work, or if you get your best ideas while your exercise, use a voice recorder to capitalize on it.

Long-Term Goal Planning with an Editorial Calendar

Consider your long-term goals and the measures you can take to meet your goals by scheduling milestones or fixed/unfixed deadlines into your editorial calendar. Measures may include plans for upcoming webinars, ebooks, videos, social networking campaigns, and more.

This long-term planning will help you consider the topics for articles, a call-to-action strategy in your Resource Boxes, as well as relevant content on your link’s landing page to increase your conversion rate.

In addition, you know your audience’s concerns can change with the seasons (e.g. income tax filing concerns, spring cleaning tips, and planning holiday vacations). Plan topical brainstorming sessions throughout the year to remember these areas of interest for timely delivery.

Consider these long-term goals when creating your weekly editorial calendar. Make it a habit of reviewing and editing your editorial calendar every day to ensure you have met your goals.

Using an editorial calendar can go a long way in helping you become more effective and efficient. It will also help you keep your most brilliant ideas from getting lost in the fray!

Have you had a tough time discovering your passion?

I’m sure you would have been told many times over that if you want to become successful, you need to be really passionate about what you’re doing.

But could simply following your passion help you become a successful business blogger?

Believe it or not, there is some hard evidence that proves that this is not only possible, but that it happens every day to people just like you and me.

Ask any successful entrepreneur about what they do, and you’ll see a sparkle in their eyes reflecting the passion they have for their business.

Well, it’s exactly the same for blogging. It’s really important that your motivation comes from a place deep inside of you, a place where you keep those secret ideals for what you really want to do with your life. And these are the things you are truly passionate about.

The major problem here is that most people don’t know what they want to do with their lives or what they are truly passionate about. The thing is, so many of us have been conditioned into a certain way of thinking during our schooling years.

And if you’re lucky, after a while, you realize that you’ve simply followed the crowd, and do what everyone else is doing, or telling you what to do.

The fact is, about 3% of the worlds population controls about 90% of the world’s resources. That means that “the crowd” does not always know what’s best. And to be able to excel in anything you really need to do something that’s different.

You need to do something that stands out from the crowd.

And your best chance of doing this, is to do something that you’re passionate about.

So, let’s look at some really quick ways of how to re-discover what you’re truly passionate about.

Let’s call it “self-search” (to discover your passion).

It’s a bit like research, but instead of looking for stuff outside of yourself, you want to uncover what’s on the inside of your inner “self”.

Please note, that this is not meant to be a personal development session, so I’ll keep it brief.

To help you understand and uncover what you’re true passions are, you can ask yourself these questions (I recommend you write all the answers down. It will make this exercise a whole lot more useful):

• What are the 50 things in life you most enjoy doing? (Don’t stop until you have at least 50 things listed).

• What do people say that you’re naturally good at? That is, what do people tend to give you compliments on without you even expecting it?

• What things do you normally excel in without it seeming to be much effort at all?

• What things, when you do them, you totally lose track of time, and before you know it, a few hours have gone past without you even realising it?

• What topics can you talk to someone else about for hours on end without getting tired or bored of it?

• What kind of topics do you like researching or finding out about more,without being forced to do it?

• What do you think your natural talents are?

• What topic do you think you could write about every day, knowing that there will be no reward?

• These are but a few questions to help you get started. And that’s all you should see them as…a starting point.

Finding out what you’re truly passionate about could sometimes take a few weeks, months or even years. What I’ve found so far with myself, is that it’s an ongoing process, and as time goes by, I try to hone in further and further into the things that I’m naturally good at and enjoy doing.

There are many books that can help you with this – one such book is “What Color Is Your Parachute” by Richard Nelson Bolles. I read it a few years ago, and it was a great starting point.

So, let’s assume now that you’ve discovered what kind of things you naturally love doing…your area of interest. That means you’ve reached the first milestone.

But this is only the beginning. Next, you have a very crucial milestone at hand. Miss this one, and you’ll be doomed to failure for your blog…

Action Plan For Discovering Your Passion

• Buy yourself a nice hard cover journal for note taking for all your blogging research.
• Write down your answers to all the questions inside this section to help you find
• your passion.
• Ask your friends and family what they think you are naturally good at.
• Get a copy of “What Color Is Your Parachute”.
• Read “What Color Is Your Parachute” and implement what you’ve learned there

Most of my readers and clients know me as a connection marketer, expert business blogger, and social marketing consultant and content marketing strategist. But the truth is, I’m operating under cover; my real identity is SuperMom to a brood of four rowdy children (including my two bonus sons).

I’m actually not that “super,” but I’m most certainly Mom, first and foremost. It’s a busy, messy, loud, hectic, demanding, and unbelievably rewarding job. Each of my children have taught me valuable lessons that have informed all aspects of my life. Because of my kids, I am a better human being—and definitely a more effective professional.

There is a lot of crossover in my life—my work blends into my mom-related duties, and vice versa. My children have taught me a lot about blogging, writing, social media, and content marketing strategy (albeit an inadvertent effort on their part).

Hopefully these five epic blogging lessons, learned from parenting 4 rowdy children, will help you to gain traction and grow your online presence.

1. Stick to a schedule

Between gymnastic lessons, wrestling practice, soccer games, martial arts events, school carpools, doctor appointments, and parent-teacher interviews, it goes without saying that my head would explode if I didn’t stick (as close as I can) to a schedule.

And forget about my sanity; my children thrive with a routine.

Takeaway

Similarly, you will create a sense of momentum with your blog if you settle into a routine—and you can incorporate this fundamental discipline in a variety of ways.  For instance, you’ll want to:
•    Map out an editorial calendar and write your posts predictably. Choose 1 or 2 days, the same days, to write your blog posts. Let’s say for example, Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Not only will you be more productive, your readers will come to appreciate your routine and will know when to visit your site for new content.
•    Plan your blogging time strategically—make sure to budget time for writing, reading, commenting and social media.
•    Work your blogging priorities into the rest of your daily schedule. Don’t forget to leave time for personal interests and priorities and other work-related responsibilities.

It took me a while to settle into a predictable routine (heck, life’s rarely predictable with four children).  But going through these motions helped me to be much more productive and focused as a mom, business consultant,  and a writer.

2. Know your audience

I often have to tailor my parenting style to the unique interests of the specific child I am addressing.

One of my kids will follow instructions only if we make eye contact and I resort to taking things away as a consequence of not following rules….and bribery. One of my sons, on the other hand, needs a lot of handholding and coddling, no matter the circumstance. And one child will do pretty much anything as long as it involves hot chocolate.

Takeaway

Your blog readers will invariably share certain qualities and it’s important to know what those are; but remember that they also have unique interests. Segment your target market accordingly and be flexible in your style to accommodate their needs.

For instance, on my blog, I’m essentially appealing to three different target markets:
•    Entreprenuers and Independent Business Owners
•     Current and aspiring bloggers
•    c-level and marketing executives
All three groups are interested in learning more about content marketing strategy.

But I tweak my focus, depending on which group is on my radar.  When I’m speaking to the first group,

I might write about landing blog consulting clients, setting your fees and injecting personality into your writing.  But the second group, by contrast, is more interested in how to leverage the impact of social media to drive your content marketing campaign.

Same overarching intention, but a personalized and targeted approach based on the reader’s unique needs.

3. Get social

There is nothing my kids appreciate more than lively conversation around the dinner table, family game night, or a spontaneous adventure. The deeper the interaction, the more impactful.

Mommy time trumps iPods, computer games, and the latest, must-have fashion accessory without fail.

And while my time is certainly limited, I seek out opportunities to engage with each child in a meaningful way.

Takeaway

You may have the most phenomenal content on your blog, but if you aren’t getting social, it’s a big fat waste of time!
Blogging is a big time suck, and it can be very hectic and overwhelming.  But starting now, every day, make sure that you:

•    take time to comment on other people’s blogs
•    cultivate relationships with prolific bloggers and industry experts
•    leverage the benefits of social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.
And most importantly, be authentic in your interaction.

I know what I’m talking about here.  Some of the best professional contacts that I’ve forged have been on Twitter.  It sounds ridiculous, but it’s 100% true. I was invited into a Mastermind group on Twitter; I was approached by someone on Twitter to edit an ebook; and I found a genius WordPress programmer to add to my team on Twitter who solved some very troubling issues on my blog and saved me a small fortune. So don’t underestimate the importance of social.

4. Don’t lose sight of the bigger picture

Some days, I feel that my time is entirely consumed with meal preparation, laundry, housekeeping, carpooling—with some hysterics thrown in for good measure.

On those days, I have to remind myself that the time I invest in menial (and sometimes unpleasant) parenting tasks fuels the bigger picture payoff. Hopefully, because of my efforts, my children will emerge happy, secure, and confident with a sense that they can always rely on their Mom.

Takeaway

Blogging can be an exhausting, tedious, and slow process.

You have to do the grunt work if you’re going to reap the bigger picture benefits. Write often; read even more often; solicit feedback; invest in your blog’s design; learn how to optimize your site … do it all over again.

At first, it was hard for me to see the forest for the trees; my blogging experience seemed entirely mired in minutiae.  So I started to keep a journal—to track my progress from month to month, noting my higher level achievements so that I could have those in mind when I felt discouraged.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try keeping a journal so that you can maintain better perspective and not lose sight of the bigger picture.

5. Keep an open mind

Sometimes, no matter how well organized I am, irrespective of how much I’ve considered my children’s unique needs, and even with a perfectly planned schedule and a bigger picture focus, the stars misalign and my efforts are in vain.
Woody Allen once joked that if you want to see God laugh, tell him your plans. Things are bound to go awry with children, and with blogging!

Takeaway
Keep an open mind. Blogging is a journey (much like any entrepreneurial pursuit) and you learn along the way.
•    Plans transform.
•    Resources shrink or grow.
•    Goals evolve.
You need to be flexible and adapt to changes.
I’ve encountered this reality first-hand in a dramatic way.  After six months of blogging, my readership and subscriber base had skyrocketed.

I had faithfully cultivated relationships with other bloggers and using social media. I had great traction. But when my friend and mentor Rich S.,  recommended that I redo my site and position myself differently, to align my offline business and my online brand. It was tough advice to hear, but I very seriously considered his point of view, and after some strategic thinking, my old blog is no longer.

Poof.

But my new blog rocks even more than my old one. And making this transition required a very open mind on my part.

So I suppose I owe my blogging success to my children. And now, maybe you will too.

Anger, fear, jealousy…yesterday’s and sometimes today’s excesses.. This my friends is all a part of the emotional hangover.

Let’s get deeper into this sneaky phenomenon that has dangerous implications in your business and personal life.

Ever have one of those weeks when there is palpable, anger-inciting tension between you and a family member?

Or you have had a crushing misunderstanding with one of your dearest friends? Or there is an incident at work that has had you mumbling obscenities under your breath and double-checking your pension benefits?

As a result of some emotionally incendiary experience where you feel wronged, not valued, misunderstood, or crossed, you can often find your self on one wild ride of emotions.

The Emotional Hangover: Your feelings can spike to new highs. You can feel turbo-charged with fury. You feel the blood coursing through your veins and throbbing at your temple. You are vibrating with anger, injustice and hurt at the maddening insensitivity, sheer stupidity, or blatant passivity that has been bestowed on you. How could they?

And, before you know it, you are off again on the careening roller coaster of painful feelings–up and down, swinging widely to the left, twisting up, crisscrossing to the right, and zigzagging to a final, lurching stop. You start talking about it again and off you go, up, up and away in a fiery fury. How could they?

The Emotional Hangover: You spin round and round and round, until eventually you are spent. There is no more; simply the crumbling, white-ashed embers of a fire gone dead. You find yourself a rag mop. You are exhausted, drained, and totally depleted from the emotional highs and lows of your charged days. You have no energy; you feel like a truck has used your body for parallel parking practice. You are a pulverized mass of once-quivering emotions.

This, dear reader, is an emotional hangover.

There is no hair of the dog for the morning after. There is no specialized rehab. Copious amounts of water to hydrate your burned-out system are of little avail.

If we want to live a more peaceful serene life today and tomorrow we certainly have to find a way to deal with the emotional hangover.

So what does it require?

It requires admitting and correcting your errors. A sincerely and thorough self inventory will need be to carefully taken.

Once our inventory is carefully taken, we can make peace with ourselves, and be in a better state of overall harmony. We can place ourselves in the field of magnificent attraction.

Here are 5 ways to Handle  Emotional Hangovers

1. Are you too emotionally attached to the outcome of the interaction? Do you have to win? Do you need to be right?

You know the expression: would you rather be right, or would you rather be happy? I can say, and I believe, that being right is overrated, but, boy, howdy, where I feel I am right, that’s Right with a capital R, it is very hard to let go and consider another viewpoint.

It takes some emotional maturity to get off that high horse and to find common ground.

2. Is the emotional event the result of a power struggle or a need for control?

There is a saying that comes from sales: the one who cares the least has the most power. In other words, the more emotionally detached you are, the more you can see the big picture, be open to alternatives and respond with reason.

3. Did you create decent boundaries and clear parameters so that you protected yourself?

One of the tenets of good self esteem is the ability to be assertive. It is not always easy, but it is clearly important. Further, one of the tenets of effective communication is being able to state your needs clearly. Are you able to ask for what you need or say no without feeling guilty?

4. Are you aware of what buttons are being pushed?

There is that old therapy joke about the patient telling the psychiatrist that his mother was pushing all of his buttons. The psychiatrist responds, of course, she installed those buttons.

Seriously, though, be it family, friends or astute observers of the human psyche, most of us can detect the soft, squishy places in one another. We are all more alike than we acknowledge. Are we feeling respected and heard? Are we being rejected or abandoned? Are we considered loveable? Are we worthy?

5. Are you willing to walk away, say no and choose not to engage in the tension?

There is always choice. Choice serves as the grace note to every interaction. You can choose to struggle, not fight, see it another way, speak your truth, state your case, agree to disagree and so forth.

One of the biggest complaints I hear most often from the business owners that I consult with is that they STILL haven’t seen any results from social media.

They are wondering, is it everything they say it is? Am I just wasting my time? When is this finally going to pay off?

You see, these business owners are already using social media (or trying to, anyway). Most have read blogs or news articles, they have some fans or followers and they spend some time on a regular basis tweeting and posting on Facebook.

All of this is great – I’ve made a lot of connections, I’ve learned a lot, but HOW exactly do I use this to grow my business?

Does that sound about right to you?

I’m sure it does.

“But, Sye, social media people say I’m not supposed to sell… it’s all about the relationships.  They say a sales pitch is like social media suicide. But now I have all these relationships, but no sales. So now what?”

The truth is while social media IS all about the relationships you must also find creative ways to sell your products and services.

Most people do one of two things: they either ONLY sell and are spammers, or they don’t sell so they aren’t a spammer. A good social media marketing mix has BOTH.

When you develop relationships with your potential customers using social media channels, doing business with you naturally becomes an opportunity, or the next step.

Today, I’m going to share with you my system for developing relationships AND how to sell your products or services in social media to maximize your results.

STEP ONE: FIND & LISTEN

Listen is a buzzword you hear thrown around a lot lately – but what does it actually mean?

Listening is about using social media as a tool to research what people are saying about a topic, right now.

Let’s say you want to open a toy store in your city and you want to know what people are saying about different brands of toys. Or let’s say you own a landscaping company and you want to know what difficulties people are having with lawn care. You can find out the answers to these and just about anything you can think of in social media.

You do this by:

• searching keywords on twitter
• reading consumer blogs
• monitoring google alerts on the topic
• participating in online forums

The idea here is to participate in social media as if you were your customer, not the business owner to find out exactly:

• Where do your customers ‘hang out’ online?
• What do they talk about?
• What do they need instead of what you are selling?
• What are their problems and how can you help solve them?

Now that you’ve found your customer and you’ve listened to them, it’s time to connect with them.

STEP TWO: CONNECT

Connecting is either directly following or sending a connection request to literally connect your profile with the profile of your target customers.

Some types of people you might follow in addition to your target customer might be:

• experts in your industry
• colleagues
• people in your geographic area
• related business, professional services

These are all people you can do business with in various ways, like:

• affiliate marketing
• cross-sales & upsells
• joint ventures
• referrals

I suggest you be selective to a degree, but don’t get hung up on this! 

STEP THREE:  ORGANIZE

It’s true, there is a lot of noise and garbage out there, and if you aren’t organizing your connections in social media, you’ll quickly get swept into it, and social media will become a time-management nightmare.

As SOON as you connect with someone, you must organize that connection, using lists on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Typical ways I organize people:

• Influencer, expert
• Type of lead
• Current customer
• Potential partner
• Geographic

The key here is to categorize the person you’ve connected with by their relationship to your business.

This doesn’t just apply when you connect with others, remember it also applies when someone follows you or sends you a request. You should assess both whether or not to connect, and what the potential relationship that person has to your business and then organize them on the appropriate list.

Now, you have some context when you are spending time in social media: WHO are you talking to and WHY are you talking to them.

In my opinion, this is the MOST CRITICAL step in social media that most people overlook.

STEP FOUR: SHARE & ENGAGE

When you’ve done the leg work to know who you are engaging with to and why you are engaging with them, the time you spend in social media will be much more productive and useful.

This part is the most natural part for people  – the talking part – which is why we tend to skip all the other steps and jump straight to it.

People still ask me, what do I talk about?

• Share about yourself (you don’t have to share “private” things to share “personal” things)
• What are you doing right now? What inspires you? Makes you laugh?
• Ask thought provoking questions
• Share your best tips, tricks, and strategies
• Answer questions and be helpful
• Movies, music, and other interests
• News and current events

The most important thing is find your unique voice and not just broadcast but also converse. Remember this and you’ll be golden, “Be interesting AND interested.”

STEP FIVE: INVITE

Let’s recap a minute. You have:

• Found your target audience and listened to what they really want
• Connected with them and organized them accordingly
• Engaged with them – both by sharing about yourself and getting to know them

Now this is where the rubber meets the road! It’s time to sell, or extend the opportunity to take a committed action (beyond the social channel you’re engaged in) or the opportunity to do business with you.

I call these social “invitations”. Things you can invite people to:

• Read, comment or subscribe to your blog. (When you do this, ensure your blog has compelling   links to your products and services prominently displayed for readers to see and click on.)
• Subscribe to your Email Newsletter or SMS list for exclusive content and discounts you don’t share in social media.
• Free information on teleseminars, webinars, e-books, etc
• Speaking Events, meet ups, and offline events like community or social events
• Links to connect with you on other social media platforms
